Reducing Food Waste in Enterprise Foodservice
The article discusses the significant issue of food waste in enterprise foodservice, which accounts for about 26% of global food waste and contributes to environmental harm, and highlights how Volanté Systems is leveraging POS technology to reduce waste while partnering with Second Harvest in a 2024 fundraiser campaign to rescue and redistribute edible food to combat food insecurity in Canada.
Food waste is a significant issue in the foodservice industry, particularly for enterprises managing large-scale operations. According to the UNEP Food Waste Index Report, around 931 million tons of food are wasted annually, contributing to 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The foodservice sector alone is responsible for approximately 26% of this waste, highlighting a crucial area for intervention and improvement.
As organizations strive to become more sustainable, innovative solutions are essential in minimizing food waste. One of the most effective tools in this regard is the point-of-sale (POS) system, specifically its opportunity for digital ordering, inventory management, and sales insights and analytics.
The Impact of Food Waste in Enterprise Foodservice
Enterprise foodservice operations, such as those in corporate cafeterias, hospitals, universities, and senior living communities, often deal with high volumes of food. Misestimating demand can lead to significant waste, while over-preparation to ensure variety and customer satisfaction heightens the problem. This not only strains budgets but also contributes to environmental issues like greenhouse gas emissions and resource depletion.
Join Us in Our Mission to Combat Food Waste: Volanté’s Annual Fundraiser Campaign with Second Harvest
At Volanté Systems, we believe in the power of technology to drive positive change, not only in reducing food waste but also in addressing food insecurity. This year, as we celebrate the start of summer, we’re reminded of the many Canadians who face the daily struggle of food insecurity.
To make a tangible impact, we are announcing our second annual fundraiser campaign in partnership with Second Harvest. This initiative aims to keep food where it belongs: on plates and out of landfills. With your support, Second Harvest rescues edible food that businesses cannot use and redistributes it to food banks and community programs across Canada.
Our 2024 Target: Last year, we raised CAD 1485 for the Daily Bread Food Bank. This year, our goal is to raise CAD 2000, translating into 6000 meals for those in need.
Campaign Details:
- Duration: The campaign is live now and will run until July 9th, 2024.
- How to Donate: Donations can be made online through our Volanté Systems Team Fundraising Page. Share the link with your family and friends to amplify our impact!
- Tax Receipts: Donors who contribute CAD 20.00 or more will receive a tax receipt.
Together, we can reduce food waste and support those in need. Thank you in advance for your generosity and support.
Leveraging POS Systems to Reduce Food Waste
POS systems have evolved beyond simple transaction processing tools. Modern POS solutions integrate sophisticated inventory management, analytics, and digital ordering capabilities that can help enterprises significantly reduce food waste.
Tap Into The Future
Traditional paper menus, order slips, and receipts contribute significantly to paper waste. Digital ordering systems offer significant environmental benefits by reducing both paper and food waste. They eliminate the need for these materials by operating entirely in the virtual realm, reducing the demand for paper production and lowering the carbon footprint associated with transportation and disposal. Additionally, businesses can leverage digital ordering systems to minimize food waste by efficiently utilizing perishable items before they expire and optimizing stock levels. This collective effort towards a sustainable future ensures that every resource is utilized to its fullest potential.
Insights and Analytics
Sales insights and analytics provided by POS systems are invaluable for optimizing menu planning and reducing waste. By examining sales patterns, POS systems can identify popular and unpopular items, ensuring that high-waste items are minimized.
By leveraging advanced POS systems, enterprises can play a crucial role in reducing food waste, thereby saving costs and contributing to a more sustainable environment. Join us in our efforts to make a difference, both through innovative technology and community support. Link to donate.
